Barbarita  Guaimarán creció bella, feliz y salvaje, a orillas del gran río. Su padre poseía un viejo barco que transportaba mercancía a los pueblos mineros de la rivera. Acostumbrada a los tratos bruscos de los hombres, no le quedó más remedio que enamorarse de Asdrúbal, joven educado y aventurero que entró a trabajar al servicio de su padre. El flechazo fue inmediato, por lo que los hombres del barco odiaron al muchacho que con un solo piropo logró conquistar el corazón de la esquiva Barbarita. Una noche los hombres se amotinaron y mataron al viejo capitán y a Asdrúbal,  y violaron brutalmente a Bárbara hasta casi matarla. Nunca volvió a ser la misma. En su encuentro con los indios que la salvaron del brutal ataque, Bárbara aprendió a hacer conjuros y brujerías en las que cree firmemente. Pasados unos años, en los que se dedico al comercio fluvial,  Bárbara se topó en las tierras llaneras con el rico hacendado Lorenzo Barquero. Lo sedujo, y según dicen las malas lenguas lo embrujó hasta terminar quedándose con la hacienda “La Barquereña” a la que le cambió el nombre por “El miedo”. Desde ese entonces se la conoce como “Doña Bárbara” una mujer indomable, terrible y legendaria cuyo único objetivo es ser la dueña y patrona de todas esas tierras. Santos Luzardo es un guapísimo y brillante abogado  de origen llanero que está terminando un postgrado con honores en la capital. Odia la violencia porque creció en ella. Santos cree y predica el poder de las leyes y de la razón, por encima de la impunidad y la injusticia.  Sueña con casarse con la bella y frívola Luisana Requena, para marcharse a Francia a vivir. Pero para ello tiene que vender el único patrimonio que le dejaran sus padres, la hacienda “Altamira”. El abogado regresa a la tierra que lo viera nacer, para encontrarse que su hacienda esta casi destruida y ruinosa. También se entera Santos de los robos de ganado y de tierras y de que el actual caporal de la hacienda, un rudo hombre de campo llamado  Balbino Paiva es en realidad el amante actual de su temible vecina, la tal “Doña Bárbara” de la que tanto ha oído hablar desde que decidió regresar a su tierra. Bárbara por su parte,  ha visto llegar al “vecino” desde las barrancas del río y, encantada de la apostura del abogado, prohíbe a sus secuaces, que le hagan daño al “doctorcito”  y toma la decisión de conquistarlo como lo hiciera años atrás con su primo, Lorenzo Barquero. Lorenzo vive en condiciones muy precarias con la joven Marisela, la hija abandonada de Bárbara; y Santos al conocerla queda conmovido por la visión de esta salvajita sucia, desgreñada y huraña, que además está asediada por Mr. Guillermo Danger.  Extraño personaje  de origen norteamericano, que un día llegó a los llanos como cazador, y se estableció bajo la protección de su aliada Doña Bárbara. Santos se percata que Mr. Danger asedia con malas intenciones a Marisela, y decide mudar a los Barquero  para “Altamira”. Así Marisela se convierte en  la mascota y rendida alumna de Santos, quien comienza su labor civilizadora con su propia prima. Marisela florece de amor, mientras aprende a leer y a escribir. Santos, enterado de las tropelías de Bárbara y sus cómplices, va a reclamarle por unas reces que desaparecieron de sus tierras. Bárbara desestima al joven abogado pero está cada vez mas intrigada por este hombre que no sede ante su abierto juego de seducción. Bárbara se entera de las intenciones de Santos de venderle la hacienda a un vecino, y corre a hacerle una oferta, para encontrarse con que su odiada hija está viviendo en la casa del hombre que ama, la hacienda “Altamira”  Ese hecho desencadena una guerra de celos en Bárbara con su propia hija, dándose cuenta que Santos ya no es un capricho para ella sino se ha convertido en su único y verdadero amor.

One night the men mobbed together and killed the old captain and Asdrúbal, then violently raped Barbara until almost killing her. She was never the same again. In her encounter with the local indians who saved her from the brutal attack, Barbara learned to practice magic spells and hexes, in which she believes firmly. A few years passed, which she dedicated to the river’s commerce, until Barbara came across the lush farming lands of the prosperous Lorenzo Barquero. She seduced him, and according to rumors, put a spell on him until she was able to keep the “La Barquenera” estate, one which she changed the name to “El Miedo.” Since then, she’s been known as “Doña Barbara,” an untamable woman, feared and legendary, whose only objective is to be the owner and head of all those abundant lands. Santos Luzardo is a handsome and brilliant lawyer, from the plains, who is finishing grad school with honors in the capital city. He hates violence because it’s what surrounded him while growing up. Santos believes and preaches the power of law and reason, over that of impunity and injustice. Santos dreams of marrying the beautiful but frivolous Luisana Requena, so that they can start a new life together in France. But for that, he needs to sell the only asset that his parents left him, the “Altamira” estate. The lawyer returns to the land of his birth, and finds his estate destroyed and in ruins. He also finds out about the robbery of his cattle and about the current foreman of the estate, a rude man named Balbino Paiva, who also happens to be the lover of the terrible neighbor, the infamous Doña Barbara, whom he had heard so much about since his return to his land. For her part, Barbara sees the return of her neighbor from the banks of the river and becomes infatuated with the handsome lawyer. She prohibits her accomplices from harming him and decides to win him over, just as she did with his cousin, Lorenzo Barquero, some few years back. Lorenzo lives in precarious conditions with the young Marisela, Barbara’s abandoned daughter. Santos, upon meeting Marisela, is struck by the vision of this young, wild, messy-haired girl, who lives harassed by Mr. Guillermo Danger, a strange man from North America, who one day arrived to the plainsmen as a hunter, and later established himself under the protection of his ally, Doña Barbara. Santos realizes that Mr. Danger gets close to Marisela with bad intentions and decides to move those of the “Barquero” estate to “Altamira.” Marisela then flourishes into an apprentice of Santos, who begins his labor of educating his second cousin. Marisela blooms with love, while she learns to read and write. Santos, aware of the exploitation from Barbara and her accomplices, goes to claim some of his cattle, which disappeared from his land. Barbara disparages the young lawyer, but is inevitably more and more intrigued by this man who doesn’t seem to give in to her open game of seduction. Barbara finds out of Santos’ intentions to sell his estate to a neighbor and quickly goes to make him an offer, only to discover that her own daughter, whom she loathes, is living in “Altamira”, the house of the man she loves. This stirs up a war of jealousy, pitting Barbara against her own daughter, once Barbara realizes that Santos is no longer just a desire for her, but her only true love.
